From the teaspoon to the gallon.

1 US gallon ≡ 3.785411784 litres exactly (NIST).

Understanding volume

From the spoonful to the swimming pool.

Metric stays simple. Imperial — especially in the kitchen — is its own world.

The metric ladder.

Metric volume is the easy half. A litre is a thousand millilitres; a cubic metre is a thousand litres. That's it — two jumps cover the whole working range from a single drop to a household water tank.

mLmillilitreLlitrecubic metre× 1000× 1000

1 L = 1000 mL · 1 m³ = 1000 L · 1 m³ = 1 000 000 mL

The imperial cooking ladder.

Imperial volume comes from the kitchen and the pub, and every step is its own ratio. Three teaspoons make a tablespoon, two tablespoons make a fluid ounce, eight fluid ounces make a US cup, and so on up to the gallon. Memorise them and you can read any recipe; forget them and the converter is here.

1 tbsp = 3 tsp · 1 fl oz = 2 tbsp · 1 cup = 8 fl oz

Beyond the cup, the pub takes over. Two cups make a pint, two pints make a quart, and four quarts make a US gallon — 256 teaspoons in total. The UK gallon is bigger.

The US/UK split.

Volume has no single inch-and-2.54 to bridge metric and imperial — it has two, because the United States and the United Kingdom settled on different definitions. The US gallon dates to a 1707 English wine measure that Britain itself abandoned in 1824; the UK then redefined the gallon as ten pounds of water at a specified temperature, giving it a different volume.

1 US gal ≡ 3.785411784 L · 1 UK gal ≡ 4.54609 L

Useful conversions

  • 1 US fl oz = 29.5735 mL
  • 1 UK fl oz = 28.4131 mL
  • 1 US cup = 236.588 mL
  • 1 US pint = 473.176 mL
  • 1 US quart = 946.353 mL

Three worked conversions.

The same rule still holds: bigger to smaller, multiply; smaller to bigger, divide. Pick the right factor and the rest is arithmetic.

2 US cups to millilitres

1 cup = 236.588 mL

A cup is bigger than a millilitre, so the count grows — multiply.

2 × 236.588 = 473.176

= 473.176 mL

5 litres to US gallons

1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L

A gallon is bigger than a litre, so the count shrinks — divide.

5 ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ 1.32086

= 1.32086 gal

250 mL to US fluid ounces

1 US fl oz = 29.5735 mL

A fluid ounce is bigger than a millilitre, so the count shrinks — divide.

250 ÷ 29.5735 ≈ 8.4535

= 8.4535 fl oz

A note on precision.

Conversions run in your browser using IEEE 754 double-precision arithmetic — accurate to about fifteen significant digits. Cooking tolerances are far looser; the difference between a US and a UK fluid ounce is real but won't sink a pancake. For chemistry or fuel-economy calculations, treat the published constants as authoritative.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers.

What's the difference between US and UK gallons?

A US gallon is 3.785 L, a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 L — about 20% larger. UK fluid ounces and pints are also slightly different. Pick the right one for your context.

How many ml in a cup?

A US cup is 240 ml, a UK cup is 250 ml, and a metric cup is 250 ml. Recipes usually mean US cups unless they say otherwise.

How do I convert liters to gallons?

Divide liters by 3.785 for US gallons or by 4.546 for UK gallons. Or just type your value here.

Are cooking measurements supported?

Yes — teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces and milliliters are all supported.

Is the converter free?

Yes — free, no ads, no signup, runs in your browser.
